Culture grows where the right behaviour gets reinforced

Every production claims to value respect, safety, and communication.

However, crew members evaluate leadership not by words spoken at kickoff meetings, but by responses to uncomfortable situations.

Culture exists in these moments of reaction:

  • When someone intervenes to calm escalating tension
  • When a junior team member receives check-ins after difficult days
  • When problematic behaviour receives quiet correction

This represents genuine leadership, and the entire team witnesses it.

Social norms develop through repeated, rewarded, and respected actions, not through written statements. In high-pressure environments, these moments become even more significant. Stress erodes ethical clarity. The right choice becomes confused with the convenient choice.

Consequently, doing the right thing must be visible and supported by leadership.

The encouraging reality: only a few people consistently demonstrating proper conduct can reshape an entire production's tone. When one Head of Department listens, others follow. When a coordinator offers quiet correction, it registers. When a producer endorses the right decision, it becomes standard practice.

Culture does not expand through slogans.

It expands through small actions, consistently repeated, spreading outward from middle management.

You need not resolve everything. You simply need to make good behaviour the easier choice.

That is how a competent set transforms into an exceptional one.
